The Medical Students’ Buddhist
Association is one of the most active student bodies in the Faculty of
Medicine, University of Colombo. Among the number of items in its annual agenda
“Wassana Diyawara” village
development project is the most outstanding event organized by the society.
This project has the
full blessing and support of the faculty staff.
With the
assistance of many well-wishers, we have been able to execute such projects
annually since 2005 at various resource poor areas in Sri Lanka.
As a continuation of this noble activity, in collaboration with the
fellow students of Faculty of Medicine- Colombo, “Wassana Diyawara”
Village Development Project will be launched from 10th November 2011
until 08th January 2012 at Kalegama, Nikaweratiya of
Kurunegala district, aiming rural development
and upgrading community health of the village.
Our Effort:-
For
the village
Establishing
drinking water supply
Due to the excessive hardness
of the water, most of the wells are unusable and the only safe well that could
be used for drinking is situated about 500 meters away from the temple and the
school. We are planning to build a pumping station and a water tank along with
pipelines to distribute the water from this well mainly to the school, the
temple and the central dispensary along with two taps for public use. The water
will pass through a filter on its way, so that the hardness of water will be
further reduced.
For
the School:-
Nika/ Kelegama Junior School consist of 16 teachers (Staff
members) and 178 students. Even though there are limited facilities it has
classes from grade 01 to 11. Although the school owns adequate number of
buildings, they are in lack of necessary equipments. Due to financial problems
and lack of stationery, attendance of students is unsatisfactory. Therefore we
hope to remedy these issues by the following.
1. Renovating and refurbishing the
abandoned laboratory with damaged roof, and providing necessary equipment.
2. Converting a classroom into a
computer room and providing it with at least 05 computers along with other
necessary devices.
3. Refurbishing the library, providing
necessary books and equipment.
4. Providing drinking water from the water
project.
5. Providing music instruments to form
an oriental band and to introduce Music and Dancing as subjects to the school
curriculum.
6. Providing sports equipment.
7. Building a volley ball court within
the school premises.
8. Providing basic needs of the students
such as stationery, shoes, school bags etc.
9. Repairing and doing a colour wash for
class rooms, and providing black boards.
10. Holding extracurricular and
educational sessions for the students.
11. Conducting a 'Shramadana’ campaign
and introducing the ‘5S’ concept for the proper maintenance of classrooms and
school.
12. Motivating students to enroll in
creative activities and cultivating positive thinking.
13. Holding a School Medical Inspection
programme with the help of the Public Health Inspector of the area, identifying
health related issues of students and treating or referring for further
management.
To
the Central Dispensary:-
The clinic has two buildings; a closed
building and an open building. In case of emergency, no bed is available to
house patients, as it has only one bed which is used as the examination bed. It
also lacks facilities for proper storage of medicine. Only a single registered
medical practitioner provides health care facilities during the week days, and there
is no pharmacist and the pharmacy is managed by a laborer.
Our aim is to provide following, to
the best extent of our capabilities.
1. Drinking water by the water project.
2. A refrigerator and cupboards for
storage of medicine
3. A bed and a covering screen for
examination of patients.
4. A boiler for sterilizing medical
equipment.
5. Necessary and essential drugs.
6. Benches for the seating area for
patients.
For
the Temple
During the rainy season, area
surrounding the Daageba becomes muddy and flooded. Therefore to avoid the
distress caused, we plan to tessellate an area of 700square feet (radius of 6
feet) with cement tiles.
Building
new toilets
The current
sanitary facilities at the temple are situated at a distance from the temple
grounds and are in a poor state, making it difficult to use, especially to the
elderly. Therefore we hope to build new toilet facilities, closer to the temple
premises.
Building
a preaching hall ( ‘dhammashalawa’)
The temple lacks a properly
built preaching hall. Therefore our aim is to help them to build it, as much as
we can.
